Questions You Have

Program Overview

What is Functional Medicine?

Instead of merely targeting symptoms, functional medicine seeks the optimal functioning of the whole body.  It addresses the underlying causes of disease.   Functional medicine practitioners utilize specialized lab testing, clinical and strategic nutraceuticals, and focus on dietary and lifestyle modfication.

What approach is used?

McAlvanah Wellness offers the following services to support client wellness:

  • Laboratory-based assessments
  • Nutritional supplement programs
  • Diet and lifestyle counseling, including weight loss and hormone balancing programs

Dr. McAlvana’s wellness philosophy involves balancing the three body systems. Your hormonal system produces your sex and stress hormones; your digestive system breaks down food for use by the body; and your detoxification system protects you from free radicals and chemical toxicity, both from your environment and from your diet. Every health issue can be traced back to a problem within one or more of your three body systems.

Through targeted lab testing that you can do in the privacy of your own home for each of these systems, Dr. McAlvanah is able to assess how each system is working and design an individualized program to rebalance your body.

Experience shows that with an individualized diet plan, a scientifically based supplement program, stress reduction and exercise, a person’s health can improve dramatically – not only physically, but emotionally. With an ongoing wellness plan many health problems can be avoided, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and female hormone imbalances.

How is Dr. McAlvanah different from other practitioners?

We address the five most chronic symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, depression, hormone imbalances and digestive problems that are typically misunderstood/misdiagnosed by conventional medicine practitioners. The difference is clear: conventional practitioners attempt to address the symptoms, while Dr. McAlvanah seeks to address the root cause/damaged system.

Dr. McAlvanah’s mehtod is a lab-based natural health protocol that tests and identifies the dysfunction of the three core main body systems (hormonal, digestive and detox).  Typically these three main systems have become compromised long before the symptoms appeared.  The lab tests are used to determine the required natural support needed rebalance your body back to its normal state.

What is the success rate?

The functional medicine protocols have been tested and proven through 25+ years of clinical experience by over 8,000 patients. Of course, success depends on the diligence of each patient in following their daily protocol and making the lifestyle changes that only they can be responsible for implementing. Dr. McAlvanah is committed to assisting and empowering her patients to take back their health and experience life changing results, if they are committed to doing so as well.

How long does it take to get results?

Results will vary by person. Some people will notice a dramatic improvement within the first month, which others will take a bit longer. Dr. McAlvanah’s standard programs require a minimum 6-8 month commitment.  Since your body didn’t fail overnight, a proper amount of time will be required to recover from years of stress and illness.  On average, expect one month of repair for every year you’ve suffered with the specific problem.

What should I expect at the initial consultation?

At your initial consultation you will be given an opportunity to discuss your personal health goals with Dr. McAlvanah.  This will be an opportunity for you and the doctor to identify if you are a good candidate for our services.

What is the cost of the new patient consultation?

The cost of the new patient consultation is $299.    During this consultation, Dr. McAlvanah will evaluate your case, make sure it’s a good fit to work together, make sure she can accept your case and then provide you with recommendations for next steps.    This visit typically lasts 60-90 minutes.   She will review with you:

  • your current health status and symptoms;
  • previous lab test results and previous diagnostic testing;
  • your goals;
  • what you’ve tried before that has helped;
  • what you’ve tried before that didn’t help;
  • your current supplements and/or medications;
  • answers to the questions you have ; and
  • recommendations for next steps (including diagnostic testing and clinical follow up).
What should I send in or have with me for the initial consultation?

We ask that you send ahead of time any pertinent medical records, your supplement list, medication list and  any lab test results.   Please email to [email protected].

If you are not the financial decision maker, we ask that your significant other be part of this conversation.  This is very important as we respect that couples make important decisions together.  Plus, we want you to have all the support possible from home.

What are your office hours?

Since we are a virtual practice, our office hours are by appointment only.   Please use our online scheduler on our website and the available appointment times will display.

Consultation Process

How does the online appointment work?

We use Zoom for most of our online video consutations.   You will receive a Zoom link in your appointment confirmation email.   If this is the first time you’ll be using Zoom, the email will let you know to download the Zoom software ahead of time.   Simply click on the Zoom link at your appointment time and join Dr. McAlvanah online.

If you have any issues or Dr. McAlvanah doesn’t see you on Zoom at your appointment time, she will call you.   So, have no worries if you can’t get the technology working at first, Dr. McAlvanah will still connect with you and help you.

How do I get lab work done?

After your initial consultation, Dr. McAlvanah will let you know what lab work she desires, and she’ll have the self-administered lab kit mailed to your home. You will follow the easy instructions to provide the specimens needed, and mail the specimens to the independent lab in the packaging provided.

The results of your lab work will be sent to Dr. McAlvanah two to four weeks later. She will evaluate the results and contact you to schedule a follow-up consultation.

How many labs are required per person?

It will depend, based on your individual situation. Dr. McAlvanah will consider the number of issues you are struggling with and the length of time you’ve been dealing with them. The typical range is one to four lab tests.

Do I have to do all the recommended lab tests at once?

Dr. McAlvanah will let you know if the lab tests can be done over time or not, depending on your individual situation.

How long does it take to get the lab results?

The results of your lab work will be sent to us three to four weeks after you mail your specimens to the labs.  Dr. McAlvanah will evaluate the results and contact you to schedule a follow-up consultation.

Can I order my own test kits through the laboratories or can my regular doctor order the lab tests for me?

Dr. McAlvanah focuses on using specialized Functional Medicine labs.    The larger national labs and local hospitals — the ones your doctor might use — do not offer these types of highly specialized tests.

Even the bloodwork that she orders is more than what your regular doctor will likely be willing to order.   One of the main reasons is that your regular doctor is, most of the time, ordering the lab analytes that are considered standard and customary by the insurance companies.

Also, trying to work with your  regular doctor to maximize insurance utilization usually results in incomplete labs and delayed lab results which in counterproductive to our goal of providing you the best care possible.

Because functional medicine is self-paid, we have worked on your behalf and negotiated with lab companies for the best prices possible for our clients.

What types of samples will I have to provide?

Depending on the type of lab test ordered, the samples could be blood, saliva, urine or stool.   Sample collections (with the exception of blood) are completed by the client with a kit that is self-administered in the comfort of your own home.

How long are the follow up consultations?

We reserve 60 minutes for all follow up consultations.

Can I purchase supplements other than those recommended by Dr. McAlvanah?

Dr. McAlvanah offers a specific line of high-quality supplements which have been formulated to achieve the best results, when used at the specified dosages. If you wish to do your own research on different supplements, you are welcome to do so. However, Dr. McAlvanah will not provide any other recommendations or advice on other blends or brands. If you purchase other supplements from other manufacturers, please research carefully.  Not all formulations are equal.

How shall I submit my new patient paperwork?

We’ve made it easy to complete your paperwork online – just follow this link:  McAlvanah Wellness New Patient Paperwork.

Please also email to ‘[email protected]” your current supplement list, Rx list and any recent labs or diagnostic test results.  Sending this information at least 24 hours before your appointment is very helpful.

What is the best way to schedule an appointment?

The quickest and simplest way to schedule an appointment is by using our online scheduler:

Schedule an Appointment Here

The earliest available appointments will always appear online first.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

Depending on the time of year, we can usually schedule a new patient or lab results appointment within one to two weeks of the requested time. We encourage patients to book two weeks in advance.

What laboratories does Dr. McAlvanah use? Why?

Dr. McAlvanah has learned that the accuracy of your lab findings and the quality of the professionals performing the lab tests is the key to uncovering what’s going on with you.

Quality is not equal across all lab companies. Many times we see “normal” test results from regular lab companies while our lab tests find many “functional” problems. The lab companies selected by Dr. McAlvanah have the highest testing standards and the most consistent lab results year after year. These are not replacements for regular medical tests, these tests are only used to detect “functional” issues rather than medical problems and aren’t meant to diagnose or recommend protocols for diseases. We are attempting to detect problems with the functioning of organ systems prior to the onset of a disease.

Are there any family discounts?

There are no family discounts. In the case of couples, however, Dr. McAlvanah can offer a joint consultation up to 90 minutes to cover both people.  For children of existing clients the initial consultation fees are waived. Please contact the office for more details.

Does your office offer single lab or a-la-carte testing?

We do not offer a-la-carte testing since this goes against the paradigm of functional medicine. If we are going to address the root cause of your health issues, we will need to take a more comprehensive approach. We only work with patients on a case management basis in one of our programs.

Does the cost of the initial consult apply toward the cost of the program?

Yes, your first appointment is one of the appointments in our program. We apply your payment to the total cost of the program and therefore you are paying into the program when you schedule your first appointment.

Do I still need a primary care physician?

Yes, we do not provide acute care services and we do not replace the services that your current medical team provides. We provide a stand-alone service.

Do you accept patients that live in other cities?

Yes, we can work with clients living in other cities since we are a virtual practice.

Does your office offer a-la-carte services?

We work with our clients within programs of care.  We do not offer single appointments or a-la-carte appointments since that would go against the paradigm of functional medicine. If we are going to address the root cause of your health issues, we will need to take a more comprehensive approach. We only work with patients on a case management basis in one of our programs.

What happens at the end of a program of care?

Once your initial program is complete, we will re-evaluate your case and determine your best steps moving forward.   If it is a fit,  we may offer you our VIP maintenance program so that you can continue to support your health and wellness.  This annual program includes continued online support and 4, 1-hour appointments – $1499.

Cost / Insurance

We are insurance-free. What does that mean?

We do not contract with insurance carriers, and therefore, we cannot bill insurance for any of our services.   We also opted-out of Medicare and Medicaid.

At McAlvanah Wellness, we like the term insurance-free, because healthcare that is practiced free from insurance allows the freedom to serve you and not your insurance carrier.   This means that we can pursue the most effective treatments options for your unique challenges.

Here are some key points to consider:

  • Insurance-free medicine puts you, the patient, in the driver’s seat.

  • Insurance-free medicine may be lower than your deductibles.

  • An insurance-free approach is often more comprehensive and high-quality.

  • Choosing a more natural approach isn’t considered “standard and customary” by the insurance carriers, therefore, our services typically aren’t covered.

  • Over 80% of our patients have insurance, and yet they still choose us.

  • You can use your Health Savings Accounts and FLEX Spending Accounts.

  • Specialty lab tests would not be covered by insurance.   However, certain bloodwork and may be able to go through your insurance.

Protocols

What supplements are used to support adrenal function?

Depending on the results of your lab tests, Dr. McAlvanah will use different combinations of DHEA, pregnenolone, plus all of the herbs, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals required for adrenal (stress gland) recovery and/or cortisol (stress hormone) balancing.

What are DHEA, pregnenolone, progesterone and licorice?

These are plant-based, natural products that support and balance the adrenal glands and cortisol levels.  They are combined into customized wellness plans based on individual lab results.

Do you use bio-identical hormones?

Dr. McAlvanah’s ultimate goal is to get your body producing its own hormones again.   In cases where hormone support is needed,  she only uses products that naturally occur in the body.

How long is the program?

Most initial programs typically last 6-8 months, depending on the condition of your health, how you respond to the protocols and how compliant you are able to be.   Each case can vary.

How often are labs retested?

This various case by case.  In general, we recommend that patients retest at least at the six-month mark to measure improvement and adjust protocols, if needed.   However, retesting is not required.    Once a patient has achieved their desired health results, we recommend annual testing to ensure your body systems continue to function at optimal levels.   Dr. McAlvanah will always provide recommendations for you based on your unique situation and needs.
